Cons Lacking certain features like USB hub/headphones mixer knob and MIDI ports given its expensive price Brief History Before we start this Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 review, I thought it would be appropriate to visit its humble beginnings in order to appreciate its popularity.
The Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 is a 2 input, 2 output XLR amp that plugs into via USB to a computer. I upgraded to using it about 4 months ago and I'm glad I did. If you're using an XLR microphone or instrument to record onto a computer, this is a perfect entry level pro amp to start with. This makes it so there won't be clipping problems with hot/active pickups. The 1st gen 2i2 and Solo models had problems with that since they lack a PAD button (that's why I ended up with a 2i4). I tested the 2nd gen 2i2 using a guitar with Seymour Duncan Blackouts and it indeed works well without clipping.
I've been using a 1st gen Focusrite Scarlett 2i4 for the past 5 months. It has turned out to be very reliable and it works great but the only thing I don't like is the latency. I wanted to try out the 2nd gen 2i2 since Focusrite managed to lower the overall latency considerably.
